Quick answer
A console table is a narrow table that stands against a wall, in an entryway or hallway, or behind a sofa. Three numbers decide whether it works: length against the wall, depth against the walkway and height against whatever it sits next to.

We read three on Amazon on 2026-10-01: a 70.9 inch long two-tier MDF table, a 43.7 inch metal-and-board table with a built-in power station, and a 32 inch farmhouse table that is 13.78 inches deep. We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.
Narrower and more specific roundups already exist on this site: narrow console tables for small entryways and wood console tables. This guide is the sizing logic that applies to all of them.
Three listings, side by side
| Listing | Size (W x D x H) | Weight | Load stated | Material | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChooChoo 70.9 Inch Long Console Table, 2-Tier | 70.9 x 11.8 x 31.5 in | 39.4 lb | not stated | MDF, top 1.57 in thick | View on Amazon |
| MAHANCRIS 43.7″ Console Table with Power Station | 43.7 x 9.4 x 29.2 in | 5.8 kg (12.8 lb) | 20 kg (44.1 lb) | metal frame, engineered wood top | |
| Armocity Small Console Table, 32″ Farmhouse | 31.5 x 13.78 x 31.5 in | 25 lb | not stated | wood legs, engineered wood top | View on Amazon |
Contradictions to know about. The MAHANCRIS title says 43.7 inches, while its table rows give 43.3 inches in one place and 43.31 in another, so allow half an inch. The Armocity listing says assembly needs an Allen key and a screwdriver in one row and “no additional tools required” in another. The ChooChoo listing gives no load limit in the text we read, but says the 1.57 inch top and extra legs help it carry heavier items; that is a seller claim. The MAHANCRIS gives 20 kilograms, which is 20 × 2.2046 = 44.1 pounds.
Length: match the wall or the sofa
Behind a sofa, the table should be a little shorter than the sofa so it looks planned and so cushions can be moved. A rule of thumb, not a standard, is 80 to 90 percent of the sofa’s width, or about two thirds if you want a smaller accent. For an 84 inch sofa:
- ChooChoo: 70.9 ÷ 84 = 84 percent.
- MAHANCRIS: 43.7 ÷ 84 = 52 percent.
- Armocity: 31.5 ÷ 84 = 37.5 percent.
For a wall, leave breathing room on each side. If a hallway wall is 96 inches between a door frame and a corner, a 70.9 inch table leaves 96 − 70.9 = 25.1 inches in total, about 12.5 inches per side if centered.
Depth: the walkway is the limit
A console earns its keep by being slim. The listings give 11.8, 9.4 and 13.78 inches. A rule of thumb for a comfortable walking route is 30 inches clear. In a 42 inch wide hallway:
- ChooChoo leaves 42 − 11.8 = 30.2 inches, just clear.
- MAHANCRIS leaves 42 − 9.4 = 32.6 inches.
- Armocity leaves 42 − 13.78 = 28.2 inches, 1.8 under our estimate.
In a 36 inch hallway, none of them clears 30 inches: 36 − 9.4 = 26.6 inches is the best case. Use a wall shelf instead.
Fit check: one hallway, one sofa wall
Take two spots in one home. The hallway is 42 inches wide and the wall is 96 inches long; the sofa wall has an 84 inch sofa with a back height of about 34 inches (our assumption).
- Hallway. The MAHANCRIS at 9.4 inches deep is the safest, with 32.6 inches left. The ChooChoo at 70.9 inches long would use 74 percent of the wall and leave 30.2 inches to walk, which is acceptable but snug for two people passing.
- Behind the sofa. The sofa back is 34 inches high, so a table 31.5 inches high (ChooChoo, Armocity) sits 2.5 inches below it, and a 29.2 inch table (MAHANCRIS) sits 4.8 inches below it. A table lower than the back looks intentional and does not collide with a lamp. The ChooChoo at 70.9 inches is 84 percent of the sofa’s width, a good proportion.
- Gap behind the sofa. Leave 2 to 3 inches between the table and the sofa back so the cushions do not hit it. Our estimate.
So for the hallway, choose by depth. For the sofa, choose by length and height.
Height and what goes on top
Console heights run near 29 to 32 inches, from 29.2 to 31.5 in these three. A table that is higher than the sofa back looks awkward; one that stays below the sofa back lets you place a lamp without it blocking the view. Count what you want to put on top: a lamp, a bowl, a plant. The MAHANCRIS listing says 20 kilograms; a lamp of 5 pounds, a plant of 10 pounds and a bowl of 3 pounds total 18 pounds, which is 18 ÷ 44.1 = 41 percent of that limit. The other two do not state a limit, so ask before you load them with books.
Built-in power
The MAHANCRIS listing describes a power station with 2 outlets, a USB-C port and a USB-A port and a 4.9 foot cord. That is useful behind a sofa for a lamp and a phone charger, but check where the outlet is, because a 4.9 foot cord only reaches so far. Plug it into a wall outlet directly; do not chain power strips.
Tip-over and anchoring
A narrow, tall table can tip. Height divided by depth is our rough indicator: ChooChoo 31.5 ÷ 11.8 = 2.7, MAHANCRIS 29.2 ÷ 9.4 = 3.1, Armocity 31.5 ÷ 13.78 = 2.3. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign advises anchoring furniture to prevent tip-overs. The MAHANCRIS listing says an anti-tip kit is included. We did not see one named for the other two.
Material, floor and assembly
All three have composite board tops. Composite wood products sold in the U.S., including MDF, are covered by the EPA’s formaldehyde emission standards, and a label may be present. The MAHANCRIS lists adjustable feet for uneven floors, which also protect the floor. All three need assembly; the ChooChoo says its panels are numbered, and the MAHANCRIS lists an accessory kit and a guide.
Where else a console table works
The listings themselves name several uses: an entryway table, a sofa table, a hallway table, a behind-couch table, and, for the Armocity, a dining sideboard, a window plant stand or a bar table. Each use changes what to check. By a front door, you need a spot for keys and mail and a clear path, so depth rules. Behind a sofa it is about length and height. Under a window it must clear the sill and any radiator below. At the foot of a bed it must clear the walkway around the bed, which is usually the tightest route in a small bedroom. As a sideboard in a dining nook it needs to clear the chairs pushed back, so add the chairs’ pull-out space, about 24 inches by our estimate, to the table’s depth.
Care and small details
Wipe a composite top with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and use a coaster or a mat under plants, since a wet pot base can swell board edges. Felt pads under lamps and vases protect the surface. If the floor is uneven, adjustable feet like those on the MAHANCRIS stop a rocking table; otherwise shim it before you load the shelf. Tighten the fasteners after the first month, because flat-pack furniture tends to loosen as it settles. If you place it against a wall with a baseboard, leave a small gap or use spacers so the table sits flush rather than tilted.
How to choose
- Measure the wall or the sofa, then pick a length.
- Measure the walkway, then pick a depth.
- Check the height against the sofa back or the window sill.
- Check the stated load against what you will put on top.
- Anchor it if it is taller than it is deep by more than about 2.5 times.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a console table be?
Slim enough to leave about 30 inches of walkway by our estimate. The three here are 9.4 to 13.78 inches deep.
How long should a console table be behind a sofa?
About 80 to 90 percent of the sofa’s width in our estimate. For an 84 inch sofa, 67 to 76 inches.
Do console tables need to be anchored?
CPSC advises anchoring furniture to prevent tip-overs. The MAHANCRIS includes an anti-tip kit.
How much weight can a console table hold?
The one listing that states it gives 20 kilograms, or 44.1 pounds. Ask when it is not stated.
Can a console table go in a bedroom?
Yes, at the foot of a bed or by a window, if you leave a clear route.
