Quick answer
An extendable circle table is a round table that can be made bigger, usually with drop leaves or a leaf that flips up. True round-to-bigger-round tables are rare on Amazon. What you find instead are round tables with leaves that make them oval or long, drop leaf tables that go from a small oval to a round, and folding round tables that store flat.

We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.
Three listings, side by side
| Listing | Round size | Extended or closed | Load stated | Weight | Buy |

How the leaves add up. The Dublin says it has two 9 inch drop leaves, and its table gives an extended length of 59.86 inches, which is 42 + 9 + 9 = 60 inches, within rounding of the listing. That matches. The Ashley says its depth shrinks to 22.38 inches when folded and it opens to a 36.38 inch round, so each leaf works out to (36.38 − 22.38) ÷ 2 = 7 inches if the two leaves are equal.
What is not clear. The Dublin page does not say whether the 42 inch round top is the table with leaves down or up, or how the leaves attach to a round top, so we cannot say what shape it makes. The Tangkula says its tabletop and legs fold so the table can be a console, and its highlights mention a dual drop leaf design, but its extended length is 36 inches, the same as its size, so it is a round table that folds away rather than one that gets larger. Ask the seller to confirm how each table opens before you buy.
Fit check: seats open and closed
A good rule of thumb, not a standard, is to allow 24 inches of table edge per diner.
- Dublin closed: the circumference of a 42 inch circle is 42 × 3.1416 = 131.9 inches, 131.9 ÷ 24 = 5.5, so 5 people. Floor area: π × 21² = 1,385 square inches, 9.6 square feet.
- Dublin extended, 59.86 inches long: if the extended top is a 42 inch wide shape with ends of radius 21 inches and two straight sides of 18 inches each, its edge is 131.9 + 36 = 168 inches, 168 ÷ 24 = 7 people, and its area is 1,385 + 18 × 42 = 2,141 square inches, 14.9 square feet. We are assuming this shape; the listing does not describe it, and its seats are not stated.
- Ashley open: circumference π × 36.38 = 114.3 inches, 114.3 ÷ 24 = 4.8, so 4 people, which is what the listing says. Area π × 18.19² = 1,039 square inches, 7.2 square feet. Closed, 36.38 × 22.38 = 814 square inches, 5.7 square feet, a 22 percent saving.
- Tangkula: circumference π × 36 = 113 inches, 113 ÷ 24 = 4.7, so 4, as its listing says; area π × 18² = 1,018 square inches, 7.1 square feet.
Walking space. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance, written for public buildings, gives a 36 inch minimum clear width for a route; we use it only as a rough yardstick at home. In a 108 inch wide room with the table centered:
- Dublin closed: (108 − 42) ÷ 2 = 33 inches each side. Extended along the width of the room, 108 − 59.86 = 48.1 inches total, 24 inches each side, too tight for a chair and a route.
- Ashley open: (108 − 36.38) ÷ 2 = 35.8 inches each side.
So extending the table across the room uses up the route. Turn the long axis along the longer dimension of the room.
Leaves: what they hold
The Dublin lists a 300 pound maximum for the table and says the top is hardwood on a pedestal base of solid Asian wood, with the base finished in linen white. The Ashley lists no load. The Tangkula lists 180 pounds and a base of solid rubberwood legs with an X-shaped brace and adjustable foot pads. A leaf is weaker than the center, so keep heavy dishes and elbows toward the middle, and do not sit on a leaf.
Pedestal versus legs
The Dublin has a pedestal, so chairs can sit anywhere, and a pedestal leaves legroom, but a pedestal table with long leaves can tip if weight is placed far out on a leaf. The Ashley has four flared tapered legs and the Tangkula four legs with a cross brace, which carry the leaves directly. Whatever the base, support each leaf with whatever brackets or supports the maker supplies.
Materials and finishes
The Ashley is a blend of veneers, wood and engineered wood. Composite wood products are covered by the EPA’s formaldehyde emission standards, and a compliance label may be present. The Dublin and Tangkula list solid wood. Wipe tops with a damp cloth and dry them, and use mats for hot dishes.
Chairs and rugs
For a table that changes shape, choose chairs that tuck in on every side: armless, rounded or stackable. A rug under a round table should extend at least 24 inches past the table edge in the extended position, our rule of thumb, so a 60 inch extended Dublin needs a rug about 108 inches across; a smaller rug will leave chair legs half on and half off. Choose one that suits the closed table and accept some overhang when it is extended.
Assembly, setup and daily handling
The Dublin ships in two boxes, one with the tabletop and one with the pedestal, and its listing says it takes no longer than 30 minutes to assemble with a screwdriver. The Ashley says about 15 minutes with an installation tool, and the Tangkula arrives with the tabletop and legs pre-assembled. Build a pedestal table on the floor where it will stand, because a finished pedestal table is awkward to carry. Check that the base is level and tighten the screws after the first month.
In daily use, raise and lower leaves with both hands near the hinge so they do not slam, and always lift the leaf support into place before you put anything on the leaf. Keep the table clear before you fold it, since plates and glasses can slide when the top tilts. If the table stays extended for a long time, check that the leaf support does not sag. If it feels loose, tighten the hinge screws or ask the maker for a replacement part.
Storing and moving a folding table
A folding round table like the Tangkula can be stored against a wall or turned into a console, which the listing describes as a quick fold of the legs and a flip of the top. Before you fold it, lift off the tabletop items and lock any supports. Store it where it cannot be knocked over, away from a door swing, and put a small pad under it so it does not scratch the floor. A table that weighs 33 pounds is a one-person lift for most people, but a table with a pedestal and leaves, like the Dublin at 46 pounds, is easier with two.
Which one for which room
- Dublin 42 inch: the largest open, with the highest stated load; the page does not describe its shape.
- Ashley 36.38 inch: the clearest numbers: 22.38 inches closed, 36.38 inches round, four seats.
- Tangkula 36 inch: a folding table for storage rather than extra size.

How to choose
- Decide whether you want a bigger table or just a smaller one when folded.
- Ask the seller how the leaves attach and what shape results.
- Compute seats and clearance for both positions.
- Check the stated load.
- Support leaves properly and keep weight near the center.
Frequently asked questions
Do round tables really extend?
Some do. The Dublin adds two 9 inch leaves to reach about 60 inches; the Ashley changes from an oval to a 36.38 inch circle; the Tangkula folds but does not grow.
How many people sit at an extendable circle table?
By our 24 inch rule, 5 at a 42 inch round and about 7 when extended, though the extended shape is not described.
How much do the leaves hold?
Treat the leaf as weaker than the center. The Dublin lists 300 pounds for the table; the Tangkula 180.
Is a pedestal base better for an extendable round table?
It gives legroom and seat flexibility but can tip if weight is placed on a far leaf.
Does an extendable circle table fit a small room?
Check the extended size against the walkway; extended across a 108 inch room it leaves 24 inches each side.
